Description

Almost every client you work with who is hospitalized or is in a residential facility desires the skills that will enable them to return home. Home environmental assessment is a service that can be a crucial component in facilitating that return. Effective home environmental assessments & recommendations can help prevent future hospitalizations and help keep your client safe so that they are more likely to REMAIN HOME.

Occupational therapists tend to be the most diversely skilled members of the rehabilitation team. This program is designed for the novice and intermediate occupational therapist or assistant provide this service in order to effectively and efficiently facilitate a safe transition to your client’s home.

Objectives

Describe the physiologic functioning of the respiratory system, the role of oxygen in the body and the general effects of oxygen deprivation.
  1. Identify OT, PT and ST components of functional performance to be assessed in the home environment.
  2. Identify primary and secondary safety risks in the home.
  3. Identify methods to formulate home modification recommendations and referrals.
  4. Examine safety-proofing strategies for persons with dementia.

About the Presenter

Lisa Heisler, OTR

Ms. Heisler has practiced in a number of settings including acute care, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, return to work, home health, transitional and long-term care programs. She has experience not only as a clinician but also as a manager and director if interdisciplinary programs on a local and regional basis. She is a member of WOTA where she has held office of Vice President of Practice, AOTA, the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers, American Society on Aging and the Wisconsin Coalition of Aging Groups. Ms Heisler has provided training programs at state and national levels, including having been selected by the National Council on Aging for the past three years to provide training programs at their national conventions.
